The Acritix installer does not give any other option for keeping data in old home directory than not marking it for format.
I do not find this very reasssuring, I have no intention of losing the data on my old home partition.
So, can anyone confirm that if I do not mark the home partition for format it will not be erased?
Amazing that the installer does not give this option clearly. I am at final install picture and it says /home will be used as /home, mounted automatically. Maybe backup first ..?

First of all you can keep your home. You can enter /home in the extended partition screen, but press ENTER to apply it otherwise it is not used. It is a bit tricky to convert a kde 3 into a kde 4 home, basically you login in vt1 (not kde!) as user then:
Code:
mv ~/.kde ~/.kde-backup
and then
Code:
cp -rv /etc/skel/.kde ~
After that change you can login into kdm.

Thanks for answering. Converting /home to ext4 is not critical, can see about that later.
Going ahead with install then.

You can only keep partitions. If you have got only one partition i can help you to convert it into a home partition. Then you make a new partition for / and use the converted as home.

Okay, got it installed.
Very impressed, it seems ultra-stable and so fast. I ditched Squeeze(Gnome) because it's so slow and both ati and nvidia install such a pain.
Perhaps using 64 bit (AMDX2 6000 3.2 ghz dual core) for the first time contributes to speed --I can see it does when doing heavy data processing.

I have ext4 on / and ext3 on the /home partition, kept it to preserve data and settings.
This is ok with me. I can backup, format etc later.

Already very impressed with forum too..

Before you install nvidia driver do a full dist-upgrade and reboot, then you can try even within X:

DISPLAY= screen install-nvidia-debian.sh

in case of dual screen add "-d" as option. It will be black for 1-2 min however, depending on cpu speed. should not be much longer. For fglrx you just do

install-fglrx-debian.sh

inside x when kms was active or when not or when you want to UPDATE fglrx:

install-fglrx-debian.sh -z

Hm, I did it before dist-upgrade.
I found the scripts, I think I tried Kanotix once before but must say
its obviously a good move to base it on stable (if people want rolling they can sort it out themselves).
But even after the kernel got upgraded the nvidia driver keeps working..
-have even deleted old kernel (the one I originally installed nvidia on).
Ran dist-upgrade now - nothing to do.
The pain I'm referring to as to nvidia and ati is that the automatic X setup they use now does not seem to work well on old crt monitors. I have 2 compaq 19' , when trying to set up ati I get a persistent black screen,
also with nvidia it just fails and you are left to blindly tinker with xorg.conf. This is on Debian, Crunchbang, antiX
Grandr and such were of no help.
On Kanotix however it worked.
This is starting to rival my all time ever best distro, Libranet 2.8.1 now that was commercial mind you.
I think you dont know how good your distro is..

Stick with this one, maybe I can pick up some German reading the forum..

What can i say, I'm struggling to find a single problem with this distro.

Hi coyotl,

thank you for your nice words. I think everyone involved will like it Winken

The german community is preparing for LinuxTag 2011 event and maybe you can contribute 1-2 lines to that idea "I like Kanotix ..." Follow Up - LinuxTag
We got only german "I like Kanotix"-sentences until now (here), so it would be really cool if we can get some comments from international side too.

Best regards, TheOne
