          | Regarding driver config for "VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP" I have read that just editing "xorg.conf" to change "vesa" to "via" does not always work (did not work for my Fujitsu Siemens laptop). The suggestion is to use a driver supplied by OpenChrome for VIA. Does anyone know about this? I think I would need to compile the OpenChrome driver for the Kanotix 2006-01-RC4 kernel (as there is not an appropriate binary for this). Where would I start with this. Bear in mind I think I might do a dist upgrade with Kanotix anyway. Is there a simpler way to get the screen working properly (e.g. ndiswrapper)? Thanks,
 coady

          | coady the openchrome via driver is included as a kernel module already. if you compile the driver it will be for xorg. btw there is a channel, #unichrome, where both the unichrome and openchrome devs are available.

          | Thanks Sokminer...
 sokminer hat folgendes geschrieben::

How do I add this module, or change my setup in Kanotix, to use this module? Thanks.

          | first in a terminal/konsole lsmod and look for via, via_drm and via_agp. If those modules are loaded then the place to look is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if there is an entry that goes something similar to this
 Section "Device"
 Identifier "VideocardVia"
 Driver "via"
 VendorName "Via"
 BoardName "cle266"

The really imporatant entry is Driver ="via" . this gets you direct rendering and all of the other cool stuff, 3-D etc.

          | Sokminer... if I edit the "xorg.conf" and change vesa for via, when I restart, the system will not boot the x desktop or start kde. Here are the details for my setup:

it seems as though the via kernel module is missing. I looked over your lsmod output and there is no via module loaded/listed (although for the life of me how via_agp loaded ????). recommend modprobe via....if it loads then change the xorg.conf from vesa to via and see if that works

          | sokminer I ran 'modprobe via' which loaded the via module, but it does not persist after a reboot. I ran 'update-modules' following 'modprobe' but this did not seem to work. Any ideas? I guess I have to edit a config file here, but I don't know which....

          | sokminer, Thanks for your help, although I am a bit confused. The screen driver is not a "via" graphics card but a VIA UniChrome chip on the mother board. So what I need to do is to compile a driver for the for the "2.6.18-Kanotix-1" kernel, rather than installing a via kernel module. Is this correct?

The openchrome.org page has a wiki about compiling the source code (see here) but I have not done this before. Do you have any advice on how to go about doing this for Kanotix?

 thanks
 coady

          | Thanks to everyone who gave advice on this issue. I think it is now resolved. It required compiling the OpenChrome driver for the VIA Unichrome VN800 chip on the motherboard (this is a very popular graphics setup on Fujitsu Siemens laptops, for e.g.). It was quite straight forward, and required only a bit of playing to configure the 'xorg.conf' file. Thanks again.

          | Hi Coady, i had the same problem on a VIA Epia Board CN13000G which has the same chipset. I compiled also the openchrome driver which works perfectly on the normal screen. But I have trouble with the TV-Out (S-Video)

Have you tested it, if this works? Or do you or anybody know, how to get this to fly?
