          G'day

Initially I was going to upgrade my original Kanotix from my ide hdd to the new sata hdd but failing that, I tried to re-install a fresh copy, nevertheless, I hit a weird obstacle:

I used RC4 live cd that I had originally used to install my first Kanotix. Followed the identical procedure steps but it seems, the installation goes only about 30-40% before freezes and computer locsk up and gets unresponsive. I've treid the steps several times with the same result.

I've attempted using the installation from the net, similar result: installation advances about 18-20% before freezing.

Is there a work around this problem? Sata is supported for Kanotix, right?

I had a similar experience trying to install Kanotix on

my friends computers. It transpired that they each had

a motherboard containing a VIA chipset (vt8251) and

SATA drives. A little research revealed that VIA impliments

SATA in a inconsistant manner and can be troublesome

for Linux. vt8251 is a typical example.

If you have this chipset I've been led to believe that kernel

2.6.18 will support vt8251 but that's no help to you until a

Kanotix CD is released with kernel 2.6.18. Until that happy

day your only recourse is to install Kanotix on to a IDE (PATA)

Sure Kanotix supports SATA. Please at least try the latest RC which can be found in the left-hand column of this page. |

Yes, the "easter RC4" didn't work but the latest "2006 RC3" did the trick.

My new Kanotix now lives very happily in its new big and fast sata hdd...

...but for future references, I still am not very clear about how to transfer a linux partition from one hdd to another... some more reading to do |

all right... I have tried your suggestions a few times, still not getting very far.

However, I do have the following on screen when it hangs on one of the tests:

ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml not found

uh oh! I posted on the wrong thread, although I'm having the same problem. Yes, I have tried acpi=off (I've tried all the boot selections).
