          | That's a good article, although disapointingly everybody I work with at the school district are not "the users who don't need to get the OS pre-installed on their computer to be able to run it." That amounts to about 23 people in my department. They buy $1000+ computers with huge HD's, tons of memory, high-end graphics & only use them to send email to their relatives or cruise the web, & have trouble even using a word processor or copying & pasting. They install apps willy-nilly & end up with a cluster of icons & running apps in the background & wonder why their computer is slowing down & locking up all the time. I had to laugh when just the other day the superintendent was trying to show a presentation at our inservice using XP & it locked up twice. He had to reboot twice & I told those within earshot "get Linux" & some of them said "Huh? What's that?" So there is still a long way to go for GNU/Linux..... |

          | It's worse than that, unbelievably a lot of users havent heard of windows. My wife went into a bank to sort out some on-line banking, and they got her to log onto her account in the bank using one of the bank's pc's. My wife said, "Oh this is windows, I hope it's secure!" ... the bank person asked another person whether they had "windows" on their bank pc, but neither of them new what "windows" was. |

but there is an alternative! your neighbours should buy a netcompi, sign contracts online for each and everything and then they can distribute the costs of ¤ 1000 over the next weeks.

Later on they can claim all of the service providers, as they are cheated because the pc is a onetime cost and the contracts they ("I never pressed this button", "I did not sign..") signed are value ¤ 5k+.

At the end the court makes them rich. America, a financial perpetuum mobile, that works. You just have to ride it!

I'm amazed how ignorant most people are about their computers. The article says: "advanced desktop computer users" are "everyone who knows at least enough to be able to install and re-install Windows.". Most users I know don't even know how to do that! I don't even think they deserve owning a computer, but I'm kinda arrogant in that regard, I guess. They don't even know what "proprietary software" is. To my way of thinking, they deserve what they get when they run into problems, but then I think who am I to judge? I roll my eyes when I have to help them, cause they are so pathetic. I think "OMG!" & resist the temptation to lecture them, because I know it would fall upon deaf ears.

I don't know how people cannot care about GNU vs proprietary, until I realize that this is just the nature of things in the computing world. People, (mostly Americanos) are just plain butt-lazy, & don't want to think, unless it's forced upon them, or if it alters their comfort zone. We all know what dumbing-down means, I think. There are a lot of distributions that cater to these people. I won't get into name-calling here, but a lot of you know who I'm talking about if you're an experienced GNU/Linux user & advocate.

The article said: "what is happening is that all users who know enough to *choose* are increasingly choosing GNU/Linux." In my area, I don't see this happening at all, for the aforementioned reasons, but then again, the article was refering to advanced users, which I think are really in the minority.

Maybe "the futile battle RIAA and MPAA are leading against file sharing" will help fuel a desire to switch OS's, but I kinda doubt that will be enough to make the people I'm refering to to switch.

It is my hope though, as this article states: "Free Software and Free Culture will prevail, simply because people like to be treated with respect, not as cash cows and criminals." It will take some time I think. |

There's a word for the marrying of corporatism to the state - it's called fascism. All you need to complete the package is Nationalism (or patriotism as they prefer to call it these days )
