Alright, I've been trying to get the ATI drivers working on RC4 with no success. Here's what I've tried.

apt-get update

apt-get install gcc-4.1

update-scripts-kanotix.sh

make-kernel-links

install-fglrx-debian.sh

Also I've tried install-fglrx-debian.sh -r

I've also tried using the Control Center in KDE to do it, but with no success.

When I run fglrxinfo, I get this info:

display: :0.0 screen: 0

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.4.2)

Also, here's the info from dmesg:

          | For some laptops with ati, 915res should installed too. the functionality from 915res is needed, while the ati is part of the intel-pci_expressChip. |

With the newer ATI drivers, all r200 based chipsets are not supported currently. ATI is trying to figure out what is wrong (in other words, roll back to older drivers or wait 3 months for it to be fixed in the new drivers) currently as it was unintentional.

Also, I check on synaptic and I found that 915resolution was already installed if that is what you are referring to. |

I did some tests with my r200 card after restoring a backup to a 2.6.14 install and I found out that the drivers seem to have problem with the 2.6.17 kernel, but not the ones before hand. 2.6.16 works, as does 2.6.15 and 2.6.14.

2.6.14 and 15 seemed to work with the old "install-radeon-debian.sh" script.

With 2.6.16, after running "install-fglrx-debian.sh", the script works, but I did get a frequency out of range error (or something like that) when kdm tried to start ... I noticed that an old /etc/X11/xorg.conf file had all of it's ModeLine's commented out, so I tried commenting out all the ModeLine's in the current xorg.conf, and then kdm would let me in just fine, and I had direct rendering just fine.

With 2.6.17 (both the 2.6.17-kanotix-1 and 2.6.17.3-slh-up-1 ones), when I run the "install-fglrx-debian.sh" script, it errors out.

The following errors are grepped from:

/media/hda1/var/cache/modass/fglrx-kernel-source.buildlog.2.6.17.3-slh-up-1.1152061097

errors are:

/usr/src/modules/fglrx/firegl_public.c:228: error: expected ')' before string constant

make[2]: *** [/usr/src/modules/fglrx/firegl_public.o] Error 1

make[1]: *** [_module_/usr/src/modules/fglrx] Error 2

make: *** [build] Error 2

I restored back to 2.6.16 and I'm happy with my 3d graphics drivers.

So it's only 2.6.17 that has a problem for me. |

Well, kelmo suggested that I install dri, as my 9200 card is supported in the kernel, so I upgraded to 2.6.17 and did (in init 3):

apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri

and now I have direct rendering and everything is good

PS ...

but I did have to change Driver "fglrx" to Driver "radeon" in xorg.conf before I could start X |

          | I think I found the problem. I use a resolution of 1280x800 as I have a widescreen laptop, this does backfire on me though as this resolution wasn't shown in the modelines for VESA so I had to add one in. |
