I have recently upgraded kanotix (not sure if it's the easter or 2005-04 release, am running Gnome desktop, and i have run the kernel upgrade, but in between I installed the debian kernel 2.6.17-k7-smp, which I was unable to get to completely function. I installed 2.6.17-kanotix-1 using your kanotix-update-gui, but gamin is running constantly, using cpu. Below is the top output, which shows a smaller than normal usage by gam_server. It was much higher yesterday. I wonder if there is an app calling gamin which I can modify or eliminate. I read somewhere that gamin is called by applications to monitor changes in files. (I know this is a bit esoteric; feel free to ignore; any help appreciated.)

kmoffat,
you can try to remove gamin and use fam instead.
but watch out, if removing gamin wants to remove anything else. with gnome i wouldnt know.
if you can get rid of it without too much damage, install fam.

I don't want to remove k3b, which most say is the best cd burning app around. Hmm.... Maybe I cna reinistall after this operation. Here is the result:
# apt-get remove gamin -s

| Usually "apt-get install libfam-dev" is a bit more gentle, nothing that originates from debian-qt-kde should depend on gamin. |

EDIT: wait, on looking again I see a bunch of kde stuff being removed.
Okay, this (below) might work. I don't really need xfce, and maybe I could reinstall later if I decide to. I assume after this operation I should install fam?
