OK -- this is surely going to be a disliked post.

But, it's my honest opinion (which may be very different compared to someone elses opinion).

With interest, I read this on the main news page today:

Zitat:
Since financing Kanotix through donations has proved a failure and I am planning restructuring to a more stable base (be it Ubuntu or Debian will have to show in tests) and I myself regard Debian/Sid as unfortunately not compliant with a more commercial orientation, he has left the project.

I'm a relative newbie to Linux (as most of you know). I decided to wait until I actually used a Linux distribution more than Windows XP before making a donation to any of them.

Where did I send my money? To Warren (developer of SimplyMEPIS), in the form of a subscription.

Why SimplyMEPIS? It's easier to install than most, and was the easiest for me to get up and running with everything I need to stay happy.

I'm currently in a triboot configuration (XP Pro, SimplyMEPIS 6.0, and Kanotix 2006-01-RC4.

Why do I use SimplyMEPIS more? It's the usability.

I've needed to mess around with fonts settings in all distros to make them more usable (including SimplyMEPIS).

I really like Kanotix (which is why it occupies a partition on my hard disk drive).

But, font readability stinks. Heck, if I do an update from Synaptic, I can't even read the text giving me choices on whether to keep existing configurations or not. It's too darn small and I really don't want to spend the time tweaking it.

It's not so much the ease at getting plugins for popular codecs, etc. It's "look and feel" that set distributions apart more than anything else to me (and someone elses needs may be different).

So, my suggestions would be to improve the font used in the default user interface for Kanotix if the existing donation structure isn't working well enough. There are reasons some users select other distros. Winken

Kanotix doesn't even come with Synaptic. So what you're saying is that you'll take the time to install and use Synaptic, but you can't be bothered to find out where its font configuration dialog is?

(Hint: Settings > Preferences > Columns and Fonts > Terminal Font)

And that's supposed to be The Single Biggest Problem with Kanotix?!

Next.

Agreed. Linux is about choice. If you choose to install synaptic, then you should at least configure it to your liking.

No big problems here with the fonts and never really had. One has just to live with the fact that Linux doesn't looks 1:1 like Windows. And with the msttcorefonts you can come quite near that look

Geez, you make it sound like linux/kanotix fonts don't/can't look as good as windows? I hate looking at my wifes ugly windows xp compared to my beautiful kanotix desktop! Linux fonts *used* to be ugly compared to windows long ago, but not nowadays.

OK -- you guys are right. Kanotix didn't come with Synaptic. So, that's my fault if I didn't increase the font size in the terminal output.

My bad. That's what I get for posting to a forum after having a few drinks. It just irritated me to no end when I updated last using Synaptic and couldn't read the darn output. So, I vented here (and I shouldn't have).

But, it's not just the terminal fonts. I spend more time trying to get Kanotix working right from a fonts readability perspective compared to most other distros I've tried.

From my perspective, tweaking little things like fonts would go a long ways to making a more pleasant distro to use. Or, maybe I just need to get a larger monitor instead. Smilie

I like Kanotix since it makes it easier for me to try newer stuff from Debian repositories that is not always available from the repositories available for SimplyMEPIS 6.0 (which uses the Ubuntu repositories and tends to dislike some of the packages in Debian repositories).

But, from a "least amount of tweaking needed" perspective, it lags behind some of the others from my perspective (at least with my graphics card and monitor). So, I rarely use Kanotix, even though it's on my hard disk.

Once 2006 goes final, I'll probably install it and take the time to tweak all of the fonts to my liking. I haven't done with a Kanotix distro in a while now.

Kanotix also has a smaller dpi size than most distributions. Its default is 72, while Windows and most other distributions are set to 96. Most issues are just dpi related.

For instance, in Iceweasel 2.0, go to about:config, search for dpi, change whatever comes up to 72 and restart it. suprise your fonts are fixed, also the default font size in firefox is 16 and monospace 13.

That should help you out.

Not only that, but there's a script that Kano says not to use any more, named fix-dpi-kdm.bash (I have 2005-04 and it's in /usr/sbin as "fix-dpi-kdm") that would modify the dpi setting in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc for you. But you can certainly do it yourself. The line in question reads

ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp -dpi 72 -br

and you can change "72" to 96 or whatever.

JimC

Our previous posts (with step by step instructions) suggest you have a problem with one photogtaphic website. I've posted screenshots of how good Kanotix looks. I could never go back to Windows because the fonts are so good in Kanotix. Fonts are not a problem with Kanotix.

The mepis theme is like something from the 80's, even distrowatch says mepis needs to update its appearance, its really old. Oh then theres the fact Warren ignores the GPL. Some might not care about this, but anyone who half cares for free software should boycott mepis. Mepis forums are nowhere near the quality of the community here, certainly not as helpful. Mepis installer is very easy, but nowadays its easy to install pretty much any distro. Kanotix and Mepis have got to be equal in the install department, except perhaps the mepis one gives slightly more tips on what to do. And the mepis installer is closed source- warren musta been the sort of kid that didnt like to share his toys. Rant over i really need some weed.

Well, if the single biggest problem with Kanotix turns out to be a non-problem (I have not had font problems either) then kanotix must be pretty perfect...

Where does Kano say that and do you know why? I've always used that script when I set up a new machine.
