          | I have yet to test this nice little extension for FF but it looks very interesting. I'll get to it one of these days.
 From the site:

 Zitat:
How It Works
TrackMeNot runs in Firefox as a low-priority background process that periodically issues randomized search-queries to popular search engines, e.g., AOL, Yahoo!, Google, and MSN. It hides users' actual search trails in a cloud of indistinguishable 'ghost' queries, significantly increasing the difficulty of aggregating such data into accurate or identifying user profiles. TrackMeNot integrates into the Firefox 'Tools' menu and includes a variety of user-configurable options.

          | Last week, Science Friday had an interview with an attorney from the Electronic Frontier Foundation who recommended to use the Tor proxy server (http://tor.eff.org) to hide your IP address from the web sites you're visiting. Any experience with that? |

          | Yes, I tried to load tor (with apt-get) last week and it choked. The error message was:
 Setting up tor (0.1.1.23-1) ...
 useradd: invalid numeric argument 'debian-tor'
 adduser: `/usr/sbin/useradd -d /var/lib/tor -g debian-tor -s /bin/bash -u 113 debian-tor' returned error code 3. Exiting.
 dpkg: error processing tor (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

I gave up, but tor worked well before I moved to Kanotix. If anyone has a simple solution, I'd be grateful to hear it. I had a similar problem with privoxy, but got it working by using kuser to make a "privoxy" user - something I've never had to do before! I'm reluctant to start a home directory for every programme I load, however.

 Bob (bobdawn)

PS - I haven't found out how to change my name from bobdawn to Bob or whatever in this discussion group.

          | tor is great but I hate using proxies because they are too slow. :/ |

I had it set up and working last year, simple enough but seriously slow. I only used it for a day or so.

          | Thanks for the information on Tor. I had hoped it would be reasonably speedy, but apparently it is subject to similar bandwidth limitations that hamper other privacy projects such as Java Anon Proxy (JAP). |

I agree. Although I haven't yet got tor working in Kanotix, I found it useful, but too slow for general browsing. I'm not a furtive soul and have little to hide, but I hoped that using it selectively for shopping etc. might reduce the amount of spam I get. .....Bob (bobdawn).

          | I have tor installed and I use it from time to time. The speed depends on what ip address you are "given" ... it changes very 10 mins or something. So on average, web browsing is about 3 times as slow for me. That's not too bad for those in an oppressive country where the government will throw them in jail for having a certain view and speaking out about it.
But I get the impression that the TrackMeNot Firefox extension is to stop businesses getting free martket research by gathering data on what sites users go to. I don't think that people get upset because the companies are getting something for free, it's just that people don't like being spied on. Right?

 Bob,

For spam they need an e-mail address, Tor or the like just masks your IP address. I know I am going to regret saying this but I now hardly get any spam, I use a gmail account for just about everything and forward it to my main mail account and send from Kmail as a Gmail address. The gmail filters seem to be very effective. If you have a domain name you can set up a mail address for web use and when the spammers pick it up delete it, only allow the names you set up through, bounce everything else.
