Hardware - radeon 7000

I have been using nvidia all this while and thought I'd try out this graphics card I got recently.

Install-radeon-debian.sh told me that no ati radeon adapter was found.

Windows found and installed the driver automatically, so must be a software issue.

Used an old livecd - 2005-01 - which recognised the card too.

What can/should I do?

Have you reconfigured xorg / removed the nvidia-driver before?

Well, no. I just booted into init 3 and tried to install-radeon-debian.sh thinking that it will update the xorg.conf for me. Since I failed I edited xorg.conf to use vesa at the moment. I have not removed the nvidia driver. I did try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but that didn't seem to change anything although the card was recognised. Xorg.conf remained the same - don't know where the config went.

Weird thing is that I had some problem after trying to get my monitor refresh properly and I couldn't start x - some line was wrong in xorg.conf. In desperation I deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf (I have a backup) and X started... So now I have no xorg.conf.

OK, reading around, it seems that I have to use the ati driver. Radeon/fglrx supports only 8500 onwards. I have set up an xorg.conf based on some examples I found and everything seems to work. Only problem left is figuring out how to get the tvout to work. If anyone here has a solution, do let me know.

*edit*
Sigh. Spoke too soon. Movies won't play... Think I'll quietly go back to nvidia.
