Problems with umlauts (a special character in german)

On FAT32 partitions created by Windoof, file names can contain umlauts, which unfortunately cannot be deciphered by Knoppix derivatives nor most other Linuxes.

It can be surprising since the files can be created with "touch äöü". It must probably be because of the kind of coding done by Windoof.

Several of us, who could not so far say good-bye completely to Windoof, have therefore the problem that restoring a backup file under Knoppix(Kanotix, or other Linux) is not entirely possible because file names containing the umlaut cannot be accessed.

In the forum there is a thread on this here: ..

This problem emerges in 5 different Knoppix variants I tried out and in one older Debian 2.1 system.

It has probably nothing to do with UDF but with the way VFAT treats it. Anybody who knows something more on this, like how to solve this problem, can contribute here and in the forum to an answer..
