Dear Friends,
I did test Kanotix-2007-Thorhammer RC5 and I found it very stable and very very good for my taste (take into consideration that normally I prefer to have Debian stable -etch- installed to my workstation for stability, so Kanotix-2007-Thorhammer RC5 that is etch based was/is my choice). For me Kanotix-2007-Thorhammer RC5 is an excelent etch installation which benefits from many Kano's script and newer better kernel possibilities.
I am looking for the next RC or even better for the next Stable Release.

Thanks Kano for making this good RC and finally choose etch as the way to go...

I posted the following on the "de" forum before I was aware of this one. For us one-language (as in one-legged) english speakers it follows:

Zitat:
I installed RC5 on a compaq laptop with a K6-2 433 processor with 192M. The first problem to raise its head is that my password didn't work in kdm but is ok from the console. I think this relates to the xorg.conf xkbdlayout option which is still set to "de" but changing it to "en" seemed to bork X. I just looked at my other box and perhaps I should have used "us".

I was able to roughly follow the update instructions in update-RC4.txt and did some clean up and all seems to be ok...other than the kdm keyboard issue. All the onboard hardware and Netcardconfig for my pcmcia ethernet worked fine and I was able to get it online easily as with 2006 versions. I haven't tried the ltmodem yet...have heard that support for that one is shakey. It isn't real fast due to the slow cpu and small memory but it seems to be cleaner overall than building up the various minimal Etch installs; definitely better than the mepis based AntiX or DSL or Puppy, all of which I tried on this machine before discovering that Kano was back with Thorhammer.

Oh, almost forgot...couldn't get the iso to burn on my HP 9100 series CD burner. k3b kept blowing up due to being "unable to load cuesheet". Finally had to do it with wodim in the RAW mode to get it to burn. My new Lite-on DVD burner would burn it, but it won't burn slow for some reason...wants to burn at max speed all the time regardless of k3b or wodim settings. At least it was cheap!

It's great to be back with a fresh Kanotix distro on this laptop but it is a bit heavy for the machine...wish there was a "lite" version. Minor detail...I love thorhammer! Thanks for being there Kano!

RC5 - On a USB HDD - works fine - it wouldn't let me log into KDE (through kdm) until I'd changed my user's password. (It did let me log in via the console.)

(And, having installed it on a USB HDD, I had to futz with GRUB a bit - but it's cool that it works at all. Winken )

Usually usb hd install is very easy now when you do it correctly. You did not use the advanced option to reorder the Grub device.map.

I did look at that, and it looked like gibberish (and so best left untouched). In the end, all I had to do was change (hd2,0) to (hd0,0).

About the password: it doesn't seem to like the slasn ("/") in my default password.

I am not sure what the problem with your pw is. Maybe you bootet with german settings then it is a keyboard layout problem as the xorg.conf is set to german (de). Check this:

grep XkbLayout /etc/X11/xorg.conf

That was it, exactly. Now it's set to "us" and all is well.

I apologize for posting in English here, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could keep us non-German speakers appraised of the current progress of Thorhammer.

(I installed RC5A over RC5 yesterday, just burned RC5B, and am wondering if there's a benefit to installing RC5B over RC5A.)

I have no further information. After download last night I checked RC5B by booting "fromiso=".
I saw that there is a great difference or progress between RC5 and "5A/5B" e.g. with new kernel 2.6.22 and other features. So I thought, it would be better not to mix the feedback of 5A/5B with old RC5 and started a new thread.

The manual in the 5B - iso seems to be finished in English and German, so you can test it and perhaps you can feedback here to other English-speaking Kanotix-friends Winken

Here's a few for you (from RC5B):

- the "advanced partition optinons" screen in the installer should read "advanced partition options" Winken

- When I ran "acritoxinstaller" straight from the menu, and installed to a USB-HDD, it stalled when installing GRUB.

- But when I started the installer from a console, as root (using "sux"), it finished up just fine.

- When the live CD's starting X, it blanks out the window for a few seconds on my computer (using the "nv" driver). All that's needed to bring it back is to wiggle the mouse, but this might confuse some people.

- Running "install-nvidia-debian.sh" works great, but it puts
Code:
        Option          "XkbLayout"             "de"

into xorg.conf, when it should be "us" (at least for me).

Maybe this is caused by power management and automatic resetting of the clock during boot. The system thinks there's been no user input for hours and turns off the screen to save energy.

the whole nvidia script does not contain XkbLayout.

Probably -- the PCLinuxOS CD, in live mode, has a "wizard" which runs before it boots into KDE. After you set the time/date, it blanks out the screen in the same way, and you have to wiggle the mouse to get it back.

I should have looked at that. It must be the regular install script then (or maybe the regular live CD), because it's done that when I installed RC5, RC5A, and RC5B.

I have installed Kanotix Thorhammer on September 1 with no issues so far on the following:
Dell Dimension desktop
Pentium 111 Coppermine
866mhz 320mb ram
ATI video card.
It is running very smoothly. I have been using Kanotix since 2005-04 edition.
I do not think Kanotix gets the attention that it deserves.
Cheers from Guelph Ontario.

I have Thorhammer and the 2.6.22 kernel installed on an old Pentium3 550mhz dinosaur. This box started as a Dell Optiplex GX1 before I upgraded to the Pentium3 processor, so I am guessing the board is 10+ years old. Kanotix runs as well as any other distribution I've tried, including the ones designed for older hardware. In fact, it makes me wonder why Ubuntu is so popular...
